When someone in your family enters a prison in Catalonia, the first thing you discover is that the sentence is not the end of the process: it is the start of another one. From then on, everything runs through decisions taken inside the prison — classification, leave, sanctions, risk assessments — and through a court most people had never heard of until that moment.
At Bataller Abogados we have spent more than 25 years working in exactly that field. We are a boutique firm based at number 205 Carrer Aribau in Barcelona, and a great deal of our work involves travelling to Catalan prisons, speaking to the prisoner, speaking to the family, and filing the right submissions with the prison supervision courts.
This page does not explain how each procedure works: for that we have our guide to Spanish prison law. This page is about the place: which prisons there are in Catalonia, how a prison system run by the Generalitat rather than the Spanish State works, what RisCanvi is, where the courts are, and who we are.
